The Merino breed is one of the world’s most ancient breeds of sheep. Typically, you can find Merino sheep in the Alps & Highlands of New Zealand and Australia – areas known for their extreme weather conditions. In summer, their light coat keeps them cool despite temperatures up to +35°C. Whilst in winter, when temperatures can go as low as -20°C, they grow an extra layer of wool which protects them against the cold. This is why merino wool is called ‘Nature’s Wonder Fiber’ – famous for its versatility, softness and quality.
Here is a list of why we believe Merino Wool is the ideal fabric for kids:
- Merino wool is warm, soft and comfy
The most important step for keeping your kids warm during winter is to actually put a merino base layer directly on their skin. If it is very cold, you can also add a second, insulating layer in order to lock in the heat. But no need to put on multiple layers of cotton and synthetics – leaving your children little room for movement and play. Unlike regular wool, merino wool offers an exceptional level of comfort and will not irritate the skin. This is because it has smaller fibers compared to regular wool.
- Merino wool helps to regulate the body temperature
In contrast to synthetics, merino wool is an active fiber that reacts to changes in body temperatures. So it will keep your child warm when it’s cold, and cool when it’s warm. This means that they can wear their merino garments in any weather conditions and be sure to feel perfectly comfortable. For babies, this is ideal as they cannot express whether they are too cold or too warm. Did you know that merino wool has been used by Antarctic explorers to stay warm and Bedouin desert tribesmen to stay cool?
- Merino wool regulates moisture
Merino wool draws moisture and sweat away from the skin, a phenomenon known as wicking. This will help your child stay comfortable whether it be in warm or cold conditions. You could say that it creates a ‘responsive microclimate’ around your child’s body and ‘wicks’ away moisture so that your child’s skin does not get clammy. Merino wool can absorb up to 1/3 of its own weight in moisture before it starts to feel damp and clammy. On the other extreme, synthetics can only absorb between 2-5% and cotton around 8%.
- Merino wool is hypo-allergenic
Unlike other types of wool, Merino wool is static resistant, meaning it attracts fewer dust particles, making it ideal for babies and infants with allergies.
- Merino wool is a natural flame retardant
When it comes to our children, safety is of high priority. As opposed to many synthetic fabrics, merino wool is naturally flame retardant, and does not melt when exposed to fire. Did you know that fire fighters wear wool uniforms? Whilst cotton catches fire at 255°C, the temperature must reach close to 600°C before wool will ignite.
- Merino wool is stain resistant
The merino fibers have a natural protective outer layer that helps prevent stains from being absorbed. So no need to wash merino garments every day! Any dirt of stains will stay on the surface, which makes it easier to brush off or lift out. If you get a stain on the clothes that you still cannot get out, check out our Stain Guide here.
- Merino wool is resilient and long-lasting
Merino is one of the softest types of wool available, because of finer fibers and smaller scales. A merino fiber can be bent and twisted more than 20’000 times before it will break. More importantly, it has natural stretch, it does not need ironing and it is super durable. Your child will always be comfortable in a merino garment.
- Merino wool is eco-friendly and sustainable
By choosing merino wool for your children, you are also caring for the planet. Merino wool is biodegradable, renewable and requires no pesticides since merino sheep simply need a mix of water, air, sunshine and grass to produce their soft fleece. Every year, a Merino sheep will produce a new fleece, making it a completely renewable fiber.
- Merino wool is odor resistant
Merino contains lanolin, which has antibacterial properties, resulting in reduced human body odor. This means the garments can be worn for a considerable amount of time before it eventually needs washing. After a day of use, a Merino garment often simply needs a bit of ‘shaking’, hang them to air and they are good to go for the next day too!
- Merino wool provides a natural sunscreen
Our children’s skin is constantly exposed to UV light when playing outdoors. Merino wool provides good sun protection compared to other fabrics, making it especially suited for their skin. This also makes it a great choice for a wide range of outdoor activities.
- Merino wool is easy to care for
Most Merino garments can be machine washed (including Woolami garments) which is great for busy parents who prefer to spend time outdoors rather than in the laundry room. Follow the washing instructions, and you will be able to enjoy your Merino garments for years to come.
